Turning Smart Lighting into an Affordable Intrusion Deterrent

Overview

Project description

Smart lighting and home security are usually treated as two separate purchases, one for comfort, one for protection. This article shows how to combine them into one, using the exact same lighting hardware for two different jobs depending on the time of day, or on whether anyone's even home at all. During normal hours, a door sensor and light work together purely for comfort, lighting the way in and out. Overnight, when an opening is far less likely to be someone coming home and far more likely to be a problem, the same devices switch behavior: instead of a gentle light, they trigger a loud, unmistakable light-and-sound response. The same setup extends naturally to longer absences too, like a vacation or business trip, where the apartment can be switched into an "away" mode so any door opening triggers the deterrent response at any hour, not just at night. No dedicated security product needed, just a handful of Shelly devices already common in a basic smart lighting setup. It's not a substitute for a professional, monitored alarm, but it's a genuinely effective deterrent built from parts already doing double duty as your lighting automation.

Scope/Deployments

Small 2-3 room apartment, though the same approach applies just as well to individual rooms in a house.

Goal

Achieve better home power efficiency, personal comfort, and an affordable layer of protection against break-ins while away from home.

Challenges

  • Manual operation of corridor lighting

  • Efficient use of lights during day/night time change

  • Renters and apartment owners often can't justify the cost or installation complexity of a full alarm system, leaving a gap between "no protection at all" and "professional security system"

Solution

Adding a Shelly relay/dimmer and a door/window sensor into the apartment's lighting setup, customers can achieve automated comfort lighting for everyday use and an affordable intrusion deterrent for nighttime or while away.

Key Features:

Automatically switches behavior based on time of day or an "away" mode toggle - no manual reconfiguration needed between comfort lighting and deterrent response.

Products

Minimum required:

  • Shelly relay or dimmer

  • Shelly door/window sensor

  • Shelly Cloud app for configuration and management

Optional (for a stronger or more comfortable setup):

  • Wall display - visual status overview

  • Motion sensor - additional comfort automation (e.g. lights on/off based on movement)

  • Camera - triggered by the same door sensor event, records only on opening

  • Smart speaker (e.g. Amazon Echo, Google Nest/Home, Sonos) - adds a sound layer to the deterrent

Results

  • An affordable, event-triggered deterrent against break-ins while away, built from devices already in the setup rather than a dedicated alarm system

  • Automated corridor lights control, working alongside the security scene rather than as a separate setup

  • Improved personal comfort from not manually switching lights on and off

  • Low energy consumption and monthly bills

Basic Setup Examples
  • Тhe door opens, the Shelly door/window sensor detects it, and sends a command to the relay to turn the light on immediately. That alone can be enough to discourage someone attempting a break-in.

  • Тhe Shelly motion sensor detects movement where nobody should be, and sends a command to the relay to turn the light on immediately - the same simple, single-trigger response, just from a different sensor.

Advanced Setup Examples
  • Nighttime intrusion deterrent: the door opens during your desired hours (e.g. overnight, or whenever the household is usually asleep), the Shelly door/window sensor detects it, and sends a command to the relay/dimmer to turn the light on at maximum brightness. If a smart speaker is already part of the setup, the same trigger also sends a command to it to play a loud, alarm-like sound at the same time - not required for the deterrent to work, but it adds a second, harder-to-ignore layer to the light-only response.

  • Away mode for longer absences: before leaving for a vacation or business trip, the same setup can be switched into an "away" mode, so the deterrent response triggers on any door opening, at any hour, not just overnight.

  • Owner notification: the Shelly app already supports push notifications for device events, so the owner gets an instant alert on their phone the moment the door sensor triggers - no extra setup beyond enabling notifications for that device. For email notifications with more detail (timestamp, which sensor triggered, etc.), the same door sensor event can call a webhook to an email service, sending a summary to the owner's inbox as a secondary record alongside the push notification.

  • Owner notification and visual confirmation: the door opens, the Shelly door/window sensor detects it, and sends a push notification straight to the owner's phone through the Shelly app - built-in, no extra setup beyond enabling notifications for that device. If a camera pointed at the door is part of the setup, the same trigger can also switch it on to start recording, instead of running continuously, giving the owner visual confirmation alongside the notification rather than just an alert with no context. Optionally, the same trigger can also send a command to a webhook connected to an email service, so the owner gets a more detailed email (timestamp, which sensor triggered) alongside the push notification.

  • Room-specific intrusion alerts while the household is home. If a specific room (e.g., an upper floor bedroom) is dark and its motion sensor shows nobody's currently in it, a door/window sensor detecting an opening there can trigger two things at once: turn on the lights in that specific room, and play an announcement through a speaker in a room where the household actually is (e.g., the living room), letting them know exactly where the activity is happening ("someone is trying to enter upstairs"). This is different from the away-deterrent scene - it's for the case where people are home, but a specific area of the apartment or house isn't currently occupied or being watched.

Conclusion

Using Shelly smart home products in your home can add a genuinely affordable layer of protection against intrusions, while the same devices also automate lighting and improve everyday comfort. It's an easy solution to set up, without installing a professional alarm system or needing complex electrical or engineering knowledge.

It starts simple: a relay and a door sensor. But the same devices can do much more than just switch a light on. They can deter, notify, confirm visually, and adapt automatically based on time of day or whether anyone's home. The value isn't in any single device, but in how they're combined.
