Mob Museum - Model Of Innovation with Shelly

Overview
The Mob Museum, officially known as the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, is situated in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. Renowned for its immersive exhibits on organized crime and law enforcement history, the museum attracts approximately 400,000 visitors annually. Beyond its captivating displays, the museum has embarked on a journey to transform its historic building into a model of smart building innovation.
Project overview/description
Project Overview/Description: Integration of Shelly smart technologies to enhance facility management and visitor experience.
Scope/Deployments (Location): Implementation within the museum premises in Las Vegas.
Goal: To optimize operational efficiency, ensure proactive maintenance, and improve the overall visitor experience through smart technology integration.
Solutions/Implementations
Solution
To address these challenges, the museum, under the leadership of Ryan Markus, Senior Director of Technology and Facilities, implemented several smart solutions:
Refrigeration Monitoring:
Deployment of Shelly 1 Gen3 devices with temperature add-ons to monitor cooler temperatures.
Integration with Node-Red to send email alerts when temperatures exceed set thresholds, enabling proactive maintenance.
Utilization of the Home Assistant platform to display cooler data on a dashboard, providing historical insights and identifying issues like cooler doors being left ajar during refilling.
Enhanced HVAC Monitoring:
Installation of Shelly temperature sensors Shelly BLU H&T in key areas to monitor HVAC output temperatures.
The additional data allows for fine-tuning of the HVAC system, ensuring consistent and comfortable climate conditions for visitors.
Occupancy Sensing for Nursing Pod:
Integration of a Shelly 1 Gen3 device with a microwave sensor to detect occupancy.
Connection with Home Assistant to activate an indicator light when the pod is occupied, enhancing privacy for nursing mothers.
Automated Cooler Reset System:
Plans to use Shelly Pro 1 devices and contactors to automate the reset process of a problematic cooler.
Staff will be able to initiate a reset with a simple Wi-Fi button press, streamlining operations and reducing downtime.
Key features
Smart maintenance monitoring and alerting
Smart control and monitor HVAC systems
Smart control of nursing pod indicating occupancy
Products Used
Shelly 1 Gen3
Shelly BLU H&T
Shelly Pro 1
Results
The implementation of these smart technologies has yielded significant benefits:
Proactive Maintenance: Early detection of temperature anomalies in coolers has prevented potential spoilage and equipment failure.
Improved HVAC Efficiency: Enhanced monitoring has led to better climate control, ensuring visitor comfort and energy efficiency.
Enhanced Visitor Experience: The occupancy indicator for the nursing pod has improved privacy and satisfaction for nursing mothers.
Operational Streamlining: The planned automation of cooler resets is expected to reduce manual workload and minimize equipment downtime.
Conclusion
The Mob Museum’s experience highlights how even small, thoughtful technological upgrades can lead to significant improvements in efficiency, energy conservation, and visitor satisfaction. By addressing everyday challenges with simple, scalable solutions, facilities teams can save time, reduce manual workloads, and create a better environment for both staff and guests. Markus’s work demonstrates that smart facility management doesn’t always require a major overhaul—sometimes, it’s about finding the right tools to make everyday processes smoother and more efficient.
