PV Surplus Charging for EVs Using Shelly 3EM and clever-PV

Overview

This project demonstrates how clever-PV and Shelly Pro 3EM enable fully automated EV charging based on solar surplus.
The setup is designed for end-user simplicity: connect Shelly Pro 3EM to clever-PV in just a few clicks, and clever-PV manages the charging automatically.
Users don’t need to configure complicated rules. Clever-PV calculates the optimal charging times based on PV production, household demand, and pricing signals.

Scope/Deployment:

  • Residential households with PV installations and EV wallboxes

  • Supported wallboxes: KEBA, go-e, Easee, and many more

  • Tested and verified by P3 Systems Engineering

Goal:

  • Charge EVs primarily with solar energy

  • Avoid expensive grid electricity

  • Enable seamless automation without manual intervention

Challenges

  • Without automation, EV chargers often pull from the grid unnecessarily

  • Wallboxes rarely have full visibility into household energy flows

  • Manual scheduling is inconvenient and inefficient

  • Meter Transition in a high resolution <5 s for optimal control algorithm

Solutions / Implementation

Solution:
The Shelly Pro 3EM measures real-time power flows directly at the grid connection point and sends the data to clever-PV.
With this data, clever-PV calculates the available PV surplus and activates or modulates the EV charger automatically.
Because the integration is seamless, users only need to pair the Shelly Pro 3EM once — clever-PV handles the entire optimization process in the background.
