Smart Home - Making Electric Gate Smart

Overview
Project Overview
Electric gates are an essential part of modern homes, providing security and convenience. However, traditional systems often lack some advanced features such as remote control, automation, and integration with smart home ecosystems. The project demonstrates how to upgrade an electric gate to a smart gate using Shelly devices, enabling remote access.
Scope/Deployments
This project is realized in a small town house but the solution is general for residential and small commercial properties with existing electric gates. The deployment is straightforward and can be implemented in driveways, gated communities, or business entry points.
Goal
To enable an existing electric gate into a smart gate that is remotely accessible and providing more options to control it apart from the traditional manufacturer button or no remote at all.
Challenges
In this specific use case we solve the limitation to control the gate with only manufacturer remote control with adding the possibility to control the gate remotely via Shelly App.
However other problems which can be solved with Shelly and the traditional electric gates have as limitations or problems could be:
Lack of Automation: Limited or no options for scheduling or triggering the gate based on time or other conditions.
No Integration - existing systems often cannot communicate with smart home devices or voice assistants.
Complex Upgrades: Retrofitting gates with smart capabilities can be expensive or require professional help.
These challenges make it difficult for customers to achieve the desired level of control, security, and convenience.
Solutions/Implementations
Solution
Adding Shelly 1 Gen3 into the electric gate's control system, customers can achieve wireless control of their electric gate.
Key Features: Remote Access - control the gate via a smartphone app from anywhere.
Products Used
Shelly 1 Gen3
Shelly Cloud app for configuration and management
Results
The smart gate solution achieved the following outcomes:
Enhanced Convenience: Users can now control their gates remotely, eliminating the need for physical remotes.
Improved Security: Remote access and automation provide greater control over gate operations, reducing unauthorized access.
Seamless Integration: The system works with existing smart home setups, creating a unified smart ecosystem.
Cost-Effectiveness: The Shelly retrofit is an affordable solution compared to replacing the entire gate system.
Conclusion
Upgrading an electric gate with Shelly devices transforms it into a modern, smart system with enhanced functionality and integration. This project demonstrated how Shelly devices provide a cost-effective, easy-to-install solution to overcome the limitations of traditional gate systems. The success of this project highlights Shelly's potential to revolutionize residential and small business automation with minimal effort and maximum impact.
