Wireless Control of 0-10V LED Dimming in Offices

Overview
This article details a solution for replacing existing LED troffers with wirelessly controlled 0-10V dimmable ones in office buildings. This allows dimming of the lighting through the existing electrical wiring and switches, without the need for new low voltage (0-10V) control cables. This solution uses Shelly smart home devices, providing a cost-effective and efficient upgrade.
Description of the Solution:
The solution involves installing Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3 modules for each troffer, combined with a Shelly i4 Gen3 control unit in existing switch boxes. The i4 modules, connected to standard 2-gang pushbuttons, transmit dimming commands wirelessly to the Dimmer modules, bypassing the need to physically run new 0-10V control cables.
Prerequisites
0-10V Dimmable LED Troffers: New fixtures must have an input for 0-10V dimming control.
Neutral Wire in Switch Boxes: Electrical switch boxes must contain a neutral (N) wire or one must be additionally routed for the Shelly i4 Gen3 to function.
Stable Wi-Fi Network: A reliable Wi-Fi network is required for Shelly devices to communicate.
2-gang Push Buttons: Standard 2-gang push buttons are required for dimming control. Alternatively, Shelly brand 2-button wall switches can be used.
Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3: One Shelly dimmer is installed per troffer.
Shelly i4 Gen3: One Shelly i4 Gen3 module per wall switch box.
Basic electrical tools: screwdrivers, wire strippers, voltage tester, etc.
Smartphone or Tablet: Required for initial setup and configuration of Shelly devices.
Shelly App: Downloaded and installed on smartphone or tablet.
Electrical Wiring Knowledge: Basic understanding of electrical wiring and safety precautions.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Safety First:
Disconnect power to the lighting circuit at the appropriate circuit breaker in the electrical panel.
Use a voltmeter or other similar measuring device to confirm that power is off before proceeding.
Install Shelly i4 Gen3:
Open the wall switch box and identify all wires inside.
Connect the Shelly i4 Gen3 according to the wiring diagram provided in the device documentation, ensuring correct connections to all terminals.
Connect the 2-gang push buttons to the input terminals of the Shelly i4 Gen3.
Place the Shelly i4 Gen3 inside the switch box and close the switch.
Install Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3:
Access the wiring compartment of the LED troffer and identify the supply and control terminals of the LED driver.
Connect the Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3 according to the wiring diagram provided in the device documentation, ensuring correct connections to all terminals. Note the 0-10V control terminals which should be connected with additional wires to the corresponding terminals on the LED driver.
Place the Shelly Dimmer module inside the wiring compartment of the LED troffer.
Shelly App Configuration:
Restore the power of the lighting circuit.
Open the Shelly app on your smartphone or tablet.
Follow the app's instructions to add the Shelly i4 Gen3 and Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10 PM Gen3 units to your Wi-Fi network.
Configure the i4 Gen3 inputs to control the Dimmer units.
Configure the dimmer settings within the app.
Testing and Verification:
Test the dimming functionality using the 2-gang push buttons.
Verify that the lights dim and brighten smoothly.
Adjust the dimming range and settings as needed within the Shelly app.
Troubleshooting Tips:
No Power: Verify that the circuit breaker is on and that all wiring connections are secure.
Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues: Ensure that the Wi-Fi signal is strong and that the Shelly devices are within range of the router.
Dimming Malfunction: Double-check the wiring connections (0-10V control cables) and the Shelly app configuration.
Device Not Found in App: Ensure that the Shelly devices have their Wi-Fi access point Enabled and that your smartphone or tablet is connected to the local Wi-Fi network.
Incorrect Dimming Range: Adjust the minimum and maximum dimming levels within the Shelly app.
Additional Notes:
Consider creating scenes or schedules within the Shelly app for automated lighting control.
Ensure that all electrical work is performed according to local electrical codes and regulations.
It is always recommended to consult with a qualified electrician if you are not comfortable working with electrical wiring.
Detailed wiring diagrams are included in the device documentation, with further support and resources available on the Shelly website.
When purchasing the 2-gang push button switches, ensure they are compatible with the i4 Gen3.
If you choose Shelly brand wall switches, be sure to purchase the wall frames and relays, as they are sold separately.
